Samsung Smartwatch Chip Can be a Game-Changer for Wear OS

Good news for those of you who are looking forward to seeing the new ones for Android smartwatches. According to the new one SamMobile reports, Samsung’s next -generation Wear OS device will be powered by a great new chip called the Exynos W920-and at least on paper, its profits are promising.

Let’s go nitty-gritty. The Exynos W920 is reported to be 1.25 times faster, with 1.5GB of RAM and 8.8 times the graphics performance compared to the Exynos 9110, the chip that has powered every Samsung smartwatch since the Galaxy Watch. SamMobile also says Samsung specifically made this chip for the new Wear, united platform which combines the best bits of Tizen OS and the old Wear OS. Just look at the numbers, this is huge. NO Wear an OS watch that is currently on the market has more than 1GB of RAM, and the majority are still running on the last gene processor.

That in turn leads to the chicken and egg scenario. No matter what software updates Google releases, they will always be blocked by the Snapdragon Wear chip.

For years the Wear OS slipped on the Snapdragon Wear 2100 chip, which was built on top of it 28nm process technology. This is a process node technology that was replaced by 22nm in 2012. That was two years before the first Wear OS – then Android Wear – smartwatch appeared. The Snapdragon Wear platform didn’t get a meaningful update until 2018, when Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform. While it added a shared processor, the chip is also based on 28nm technology. In 2018, Apple and Samsung have moved on 7nm and 10nm process technology, respectively. Last June, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon Wear 4100 platform, which promises to increase the processing power from 28nm … to 12nm. While that is a significant improvement, the technology is still several generations behind. In 2021, there will still be just two smart watches Wear OS which uses the Qualcomm 4100 platform: Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 3 and TicWatch Pro 3 LTE.

This is a big reason why Wear OS smart watches often feel left behind compared to Samsung’s Tizen OS watches, Apple Watches, and less power-Intensive fitbits. This is also why the marquee features such as LTE connections and sleep-Tracking took a long time to make the Wear OS hardware.

So the fact of that first smart watches to feature a new unified platform will be powered by using chips during process technology? That needs to be noted. This is by no means a guarantee that the new platform will excel, or will not be overcome. Still, at least give this new platform a chance to get started as well as possible.

When Samsung and Google officially announcing their collaboration, Gizmodo asked if it was possible that Samsung might license its processor technology to other companies in the space. At the time, Samsung declined to comment. Very likely it didn’t happen and this moist meat processor only works on Samsung watches. However, if ia is heading to another smartwatch, it’s huge. And while not, proving that the new Wear OS can be great on current hardware might give Qualcomm a go kick in ass to stop dragging his feet while updating the Snapdragon Wear platform. Or, who knows? Perhaps this inspires other vendors to experiment with their own SoCs and bypass Qualcomm entirely.

Whatever eventually happens, a processor capable of showcasing the true potential of the Wear OS is long overdue – and this is reason to hope that Google and Samsung are serious about this new venture being successful.
