Apple employees threatened to quit as the company took a firm stance in long -distance work

Apple employees claim the company is unmoved to design a hybrid work model for corporate employees and in some cases is pushing for exemptions from home, including an accommodation covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Citing an internal Slack thread, The Verge reported Apple employees threatening to quit because of what they considered to be overly strict rules on long -distance work policy.

In June, Apple announced a hybrid work schedule that would see employees return to the office for three days a week beginning in September, a shift toward normal corporate operations after the outbreak forced long periods of work from home. A few days later, participants considered the same remote work control channel referred to by The Verge asking for more flexibility, saying that working from home brings a number of benefits including greater diversity and participation in employee retention and hiring, breaking down pre -existing communication barriers, better work -life balance, more remote employee integration / location flexibility well, and a reduction in the spread of pathogens.

The request was flatly denied. In a video to employees late last month, retail SVP and folks Deirdre O’Brien followed guidelines on long-distance work policy, saying, “We believe that collaboration in person is critical to our culture and future. If it’s time to reflect. our incredible product launch last year, the product and launch execution was built on the foundation of years of work we did when we were all together live. ”

Apple’s corporate ideology has long stated that employee engagement is an essential element to innovation. Late Apple founder Steve Jobs was a proponent of the philosophy until he helped design Apple Park’s main building – effectively a large ring – to facilitate a seamless encounter.

With plans to implement a hybrid model going forward, employees now claim Apple is pushing for exceptions to the rules in offices that were once allowed. For example, an unnamed employee who is now allowed to work at home through ADA lodging said that Apple will push the exemption in September.

“I will be out of work in September,” the man wrote on the Slack channel which now has about 6,000 members.

Apple will apparently make an exception for people with documented medical conditions, but acquiring the accommodation reportedly requires employees to verify their status by releasing medical records to the company. The request made some people uncomfortable, the report said.

Employees are now discussing the best way to respond, either through another letter or legal action. About 10 people plan to resign or know others who will resign because of the hybrid policy, the report said.
