Disruptive Games: From the Bronx to Nintendo Top will detail Reggie Fils-Aimé’s beginnings, his time at Nintendo of America and more.
Former Nintendo America president and chief operating officer Reggie Fils-Aimé announced that he is writing a book about his career and the leadership skills he has taken up over the years, to be titled Disruptive Games: From the Bronx to the Top of Nintendo. Fils-Aimé retired from his post as president in 2019, after working at the company for nearly 16 years.
Fils-Aimé is best known for helping Nintendo improve its image in the mid-2000s, a period when the company struggled to compete with rivals Microsoft and Sony. He entered Nintendo of America as executive vice president of sales and marketing in 2003, and quickly made a name for himself after leading Nintendo’s press briefing at E3 in 2004 and opened with, “My name is Reggie. I’m about kickin ass, I’m about takin name, and we’re about games’.” The introduction was just the beginning of an effort to revive Nintendo’s relationship with the North American fan base, and two years later he became branch president and COO. Under Fils -Aimé’s leadership, the company experienced successes like the Wii and DS – and a few failures like the Wii U – that helped solidify its current position at the forefront of the gaming industry.
A more detailed note on his time at Nintendo will be included in an upcoming Fils-Aime book, Disruptive Games: From the Bronx to the Summit of Nintendo, scheduled to be published by HarperCollins Leadership on May 24, 2022 (via VideoGamesChronicle). Son-Aimé didn’t reveal too much information in his Twitter announcement, but he tweeted a link to Amazon’s listing for those looking for more information. According to the summary, the book aims to compile the anecdotes and lessons Fils-Aimé has learned throughout his career so that readers can achieve their own goals. Some followers commented that the book would pair perfectly Tanya Iwata: Words of Wisdom from Satoru Iwata, CEO of Legendary Nintendo, a collection of recently published motivational interviews of former Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata, who passed away in 2015.
Fils-Aimé has remained busy since leaving Nintendo two years ago. His projects and activities are many, but he stays close to the gaming industry through a variety of means. He joined the New York Video Game Critics Circle board of directors with the goal of bringing games and scholarships to the underserved community by the end of 2019. He then became a member of the GameStop board of directors in 2020, but resigned himself last March. Just over a year ago, Fils-Aimé also stepped in to serve as a strategy advisor for indie publisher Rogue Games, indicating that he would not be permanently away from the gaming industry. The book, however, is Fils-Aimé’s latest post-Nintendo effort-and one that fans can also enjoy.
Based on Fils-Aimé’s career and influential influence on Nintendo and beyond, he looks like the perfect person to write a motivational memoir. Disruptive Games: From the Bronx to the Summit of Nintendo will surely delight readers, whether they seek advice on how they reach the corporate level or just want to find out more about one of the gaming industry’s most recognizable figures. No matter what the reader is looking for, Fils-Aimé’s life can certainly be learned.
