Wong Kar Wai’s “Ashes of Time Redux” embodies the adage “style over substance,” with the Chinese director marrying intriguing visuals with an impenetrable plot.
In 1994, Wong (“My Blueberry Nights,” “In the Mood for Love”) made “Ashes of Time,” a film prequel to Louis Cha’s martial arts novel “The Eagle-Shooting Heroes.” The film wasn’t released in the United States, and over the years, different versions have been circulated, prompting Wong to revisit the film.
