Instagram has launched a new ‘Security Check’ feature that will guide people whose accounts may have been hacked through steps to secure their accounts.
Facebook -owned photo -sharing website says that the new features include checking incoming activity, reviewing profile information and updating recovery contact information.
The firm says that this is another way to keep accounts as secure as possible, but also recommends that users allow two -factor authentication to reduce the risk of hacking.
This is where a phone number or an authentication application like Duo Mobile or Google Authentication is needed when you sign in from a new device.
Instagram users will also be able to secure their accounts using two-factor authentication via WhatsApp in certain countries in the next few weeks.

The firm says that this is another way to keep accounts as secure as possible, but also recommends that users allow two -factor authentication to reduce the risk of hacking.
The social media giant says that the Security Check feature will help people keep their accounts safe in case they are at risk of being hacked, or have been hacked.
To ensure this, they induce a number of personal responsibilities, including two -factor verification measures and updating contact information.
They also give advice on ‘red flags’ including if you get a direct order from the firm, saying that ‘Instagram will never send a DM to you’.
This is in response to the rise of malicious accounts that prompt people to try and access sensitive information such as account passwords.
These accounts can notify users that their account is at risk of being banned, that they are violating a policy on intellectual property, or that photos are shared elsewhere in an effort to gain control of the account.
‘These messages are often fraudulent and violate our policies. Instagram will never send you a DM. When we find fraud like this, we take action against it, ” the firm said.
“But we also encourage you to report content and block accounts.

“We’ve been sending notifications at the top of people’s Inboxes to warn them about this message over the past 2 months.”
Instagram says if they want to contact you to talk about the account, they will use the ‘Email from Instagram’ tab in settings.
They’ve encouraged people to report questionable content or accounts, because while technology can detect new trends and techniques used by hackers and spammers, it doesn’t work all the time.
“You can also report each piece of content to us by tapping three dots on the post, holding a message, or by visiting the account and reporting directly from the profile,” Instagram wrote in a blog post.

A login request is another feature that users want to activate, this is linked to two -factor authentication, alerting the user when someone tries to log in to an account from a previously unused browser or device.
This alert will specify which device is trying to sign in and where it is located, allowing the user to immediately approve or reject requests from the already signed in device.
‘You can also see a list of devices that have just logged into your Instagram account at any time under“ Settings, ”“ Security, ”“ Login Activity, ”” Instagram says.
“If you don’t recognize a recent sign-in, you can sign out of that location or device and let us know that the sign-in isn’t yours.”
Accounts that impersonate someone else, use their authentication status to hack and target people, or generally engage in spam behavior in hopes of misleading people on Instagram in violation of website rules.

“We continue to improve our technology to find and stop this behavior.”
To help people who are reporting this issue, or have been hacked, Instagram says it is improving its support inbox so users can find out what has happened to their reports.
“This includes being able to easily see the status of all the things you’ve ever reported on Instagram, see your posts that may be in violation of our rules, and how to appeal the decision,” according to the firm.
“From there you can find more information about the status of the things you reported to us.”
